3D Creation Pipeline for Film & Games
Week 4:
Hello, I am back with a new entry this week. Now let's discuss the things we did this week in class and my independent study over the week. We started this week with an introduction to shape language, basics of Zbrush and character blocking.
What is Shape Language?
It means that each shape has a meaning behind it, for example like a triangle with the sharp edges means dangerous or energetic. Square also has sharp edges with anchored support and its solid. And finally, we have a circle which means friendly and safe.
Below are a few examples which describe the characters based on shape.
Let's start with the top right corner of the above image, that is the character sheet for Soran in the dragon Prince, he is a person who is there to always help the king and is the youngest crown guard for the king, with keeping shape language in mind he is made of squares which means he strong stable and solid support for those who need him.
Next, we move onto the top left image which is the image of Aaravos from the dragon prince, he is mysterious, strong, dangerous and powerful, here are the shapes which corresponds to him are triangles and similar sharp-edged shapes.
Next, we have the image on the bottom right corner is Barius the Baker from the dragon prince, who is a friendly and safe person who can never harm you. The shape which corresponds to him is the circle which means safe or friendly.
And the last image is Amaya from dragon prince who Is the highest ranking general in the army and she is an immovable object and an unstoppable force. She mainly corresponds to the shape of a square and a bit of triangle's since she is dangerous to her enemies.
These character sheets helped me understand shape language for characters better and interpret their characters based on shape alone.
Shape design in Zbrush?
This is like the shape deign in 2D, but we do it is done in 3D which can have complex shapes and define the character.
Zbrush Navigations:
Zbrush is Software which runs on 2.5d space and is mainly used for sculpting and retopology. The main things we learnt on zbrush was the interface navigations and the hotkeys we were asked to create a character or element in the software, and we also thought how to start with the 3d design for the character and then take the silhouette of it and see if we can improve on a 2d base and take it back to the software and see how it comes out as a 3d object and vice versa.
As we use basic shapes to block a 2d object we do the same in a 3d format in Zbrush to block a character using a little more complex shape.
A few examples for blocking.
These were the main things which we learnt for this week.
Self-reflection:
With the exercises done in class over the week I got to know where I am in terms of catching up on the subject which is I am a beginner.
This also lets me know how much work I must do to get the basics of the zbrush down.
The basic exercises of Zbrush and learning the basics of character design and shape language has helped me imagine and figure out how and why and what are the characteristics of the subject.
Thank you, I will be back in a few days!
